Argentine grain exports were down 40% in the first week of April compared to the same period last year. Even though this year's harvest is 15% higher than in 2014, the US$3.4 billion in year-to-date export earnings from grain sales was 32% below last year's figures.
Part of the problem is that large agribusiness is withholding part of the soybean crop, waiting for an upturn in international prices.
Farmers' organizations are seeking a comprehensive agrarian reform that would reorganize agriculture to attend to the nation's needs.
